We all have past events, circumstances and situations in our lives that we wish had turned out differently. It’s easy to fall into the would have, should have, or could have mentality when thinking about what didn’t work out the way that we wanted or expected.
It can be tempting to judge or second guess past choices. We may think that if only we hadn’t stayed so long, made a better choice, or gone another direction then maybe our life would have turned out differently.
A special friend of mine once had a powerful response when I was expressing regret and sadness over choices I had made in the past. As she listened to me talk about how much time I had lost and decisions that I regretted, she just smiled and shrugged.
She said that maybe I had to go there to be here, meaning that every experience helped me become who I am and contributed to what I'm accomplishing now.
She explained that every experience we have teaches important lessons, helps us grow, and can lead us to better choices to create what we want. I realized that the powerful insights I learned from the events that I regretted generated changes that later opened new doors for me.
By embracing your past with love, compassion, and forgiveness, it helps you appreciate what you gained from each experience even if the outcome wasn't what you wanted at the time. Even wrong turns, perceived mistakes, or unexpected directions have contributed to who you are and where you are now.
Take a moment to appreciate all your past and embrace the higher lessons learned. Maybe you had to go there to be exactly where you are right now to receive the joy, love, and abundance that you are experiencing today.
